Episode #3: Is Yoga Only For Rich White People?
Apr 21, 2023 Season 1 Episode 3

Diversity, inclusiveness and accessibility are much needed in the yoga space.  As someone who has pretty much always been the only Black man in the yoga studio, it's important that we break down the assumptions and perceptions about what yoga is and who yoga is for.  Because I once thought that yoga wasn’t for me, and that I was excluded from it. But I gave it a shot, and it changed my life.

Yoga isn’t about image or aspiration. To me, it's a sacred ritual, it's an everyday physical, mental, emotional and spiritual practice. Yoga is not ours to co-opt, but rather, we should share the space and expand its reach so that it includes ALL people. I want those who may be feeling like I did, who feel excluded from yoga, to know that it’s for them, too. That they can practice yoga and benefit from it, too.

That’s why I chose to become a yoga teacher, that’s why I’m using my platform to show that just like success and happiness, yoga isn’t off limits to anyone. Because I  know that yoga isn't only for a certain segment of people. I want to let ALL people know that yoga is for them - that yoga doesn’t have a size, a weight or a color!! Yoga is TRULY available to all!

If you want to practice yoga with me, I currently teach at three locations in-person in Portland, Oregon. You can view my current teaching schedule and book a yoga class with me using the link HERE.
